John Mayer and Norah Jones smooth out this week’s FOXLight Music Release roundup.  Mayer’s Battle Studies, while nothing new, certainly won’t disappoint his fanbase.  But Norah Jones’ The Fall is a departure, veering away from piano-jazz toward guitar-based alt-country.

Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, Queen of the Stone Age Josh Homme and legendary Led Zep bassist John Paul Jones form the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, whose self-titled debut rocks like you’d think it would.

Sir Paul McCartney’s opening act at New York’s new site of Mets’ losses, Citi Field, is chronicled on the 2 CD/1 DVD Good Evening, New York City.

50 Cent’s much delayed Before I Self Destruct finally gets released, with help from, say it with me now, Eminem and Dr. Dre.

American Idol winner Kris Allen drops a self-titled debut to hold your interest till runner-up Adam Lambert drops his.

Leona Lewis returns with her second effort titled Echo.

Waking Up is the latest from Timbaland protégés OneRepublic.

My World is the debut from 15-year-old Usher protégé Justin Bieber.

Katy Perry: MTV Unplugged covers her stint on the relaunched series.

Janet Jackson’s Number Ones collects all her chart-toppers,  plus a couple of future ones, on 2 CDs.

Tuesday Night Music Club, the album that launched the career of Sheryl Crow, gets a Deluxe Edition upgrade adding a second CD of B-sides, rarities and outtakes and a DVD with a documentary and music videos.

David Bowie’s Space Oddity also gets tricked out in a 40^th Anniversary Edition adding a disc of demos, alternate mixes and BBC sessions.

Rush must be on course to release as many live albums as studio ones, and their latest is called Working Men.

The Doors already have more live albums than studio output and they too add another: Live In New York, a six disc document of their 1970 stand at the Felt Forum.

And Atlantic Records: The Time Capsule is a mammoth limited edition 9 CD/1 DVD/1 Vinyl 45 set that covers the history of the house that Ahmet Ertegun built in 168 tracks.

Abrams shows how the young Kirk, Spock and Bones came together, and Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban respectively (and respectfully) do their roles, and the legacy, justice.

Sasha Baron Cohen lent his guerilla-style comedy to Brüno, this time out wreaking havoc as a gay European fashionista who makes real-life mincemeat out of Senator Ron Paul, Paula Abdul and, in a bit restored for the DVD release, La Toya Jackson.

Cameron Diaz and Jason Patric have one daughter with Leukemia (Sonia Vassilieva) and conceive another (Abigail Breslin) with the intent to use her to save her sick sister in My Sister’s Keeper.

Entourage’s Jeremy Piven is a mega-obnoxious used car salesman who has one week to save a local dealership from bankruptcy in The Goods:  Live Hard, Sell Hard. Helping Piven move those 200 cars in seven days, or die trying, is a motley crew including Ving Rhames, Kathryn Hahn, James Brolin and Alan Thicke.

Ed Asner is the voice of a curmudgeonly former balloon salesman who decides to fly his entire house to South America in the latest Disney/Pixar hit, Up. He soon discovers an 8 year old stowaway, and you can guess he’s none too pleased.  At first.

Katherine Heigl is an unlucky in love TV Morning Show producer who gets teamed up with uber-male Gerard Butler in The Ugly Truth. Butler gets ratings, and helps Heigl, by telling “the ugly truth” about what makes men and women tick.

Ashton Kutcher is a man who uses his wares to live the high life in L.A. in Spread. Anne Heche is his sugar mama, until he meets Margarita Leveiva, the female version of himself.

Also out this week…

Kings of Leon go back across the pond where their career initially exploded in the concert DVD Kings of Leon: Live at the O2 London, England, which covers a show filmed earlier this year filled with 22 incendiary performances.

A real, um, fake American hero leads this week’s FOXLight DVD release roundup.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra brings the action figure crew to celluloid, with Channing Tatum as Duke and Marlon Wayans as Ripcord, in pursuit of the evil Cobra, the evil organization out to destroy the world, while under the command of Dennis Quaid as General Hawk.  Game on!

Needless remake The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 has John Travolta as the gang leader who takes a NYC subway train hostage, and Denzel Washington as the dispatcher who tries to bring him down.  Seek out the 1974 original, with Robert Shaw and Walter Matthau instead.  You’ll thank me.

And knee-high alien invaders are being battled by kids on a family vacation, all under the nose of their clueless parents, in Aliens In The Attic.

I Love You, Beth Cooper follows Paul Rust as a high school valedictorian who spent his entire educational career playing it safe and boring…right up till the end, when he finally professes his love for Hayden Panettiere. Play On is the third album from Carrie Underwood, who is officially a superstar with 10 #1 Country singles to her credit, and is primed for more.

Weezer return with Raditude, a decidedly more pop/less rock-oriented effort.

Glee: The Music – Season One, Volume 1, features the hit show’s cast’s take on classics originally by Neil Diamond and Journey.

NCIS: The Official TV Soundtrack, Vol. 2, unearths an unreleased Bob Dylan track from the ‘60s.

Foo Fighters’ Greatest Hits looks back on 15 years of hits plus 2 new tracks.

Andrea Bocelli’s in the holiday mood with My Christmas, his first such endeavor with an eclectic roster of guests from Mary J. Blige to The Muppets.

Frank Sinatra: New York is a 4 CD/1 DVD box of previously unreleased performances recorded in the Empire State between 1955 and 1990.

Creedence Clearwater Revival’s The Singles Collection is 30 tracks in their original single mixes, a first on CD, plus a bonus DVD.

The family hit of this past summer leads this week’s pack of DVD releases in the FOXLight.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs has the pre-historic creatures voiced by Ray Romano, Denis Leary and John Leguizamo entering the Jurassic period with a pack of cranky-but-cute dinosaurs with the voices of Simon Pegg and Seann William Scott among others.  And the result was almost a billion dollars in worldwide box office.

Orphan is everyone’s adoption nightmare come to celluloid. Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga suffer a miscarriage, and decide to adopt instead. And darling little Isabelle Fuhrman arrives to inject a little Hell in their lives.

Nothing Like the Holidays follows the Rodriguez family’s holiday trials and tribulations on the occasion of a family reunion where, of course, nothing goes smoothly. Starring John Leguizamo, Freddy Rodriguez and Luis Guzman.

Larry David curbs his enthusiasm for Woody Allen, in Whatever Works. This time out Allen stays behind the camera and places David front and center as what has become the mainstay protagonist of Allen’s recent work: the cranky old guy who has a cute, young girl improbably fall in love with him.  Evan Rachel Wood is the girl, and the premise is, once again, a head-shaker.

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, the latest installment of the sci-fi smash, starring Edward James Olmos

The Rock banner is flown high by this cross-genre trio: Atreyu celebrate 10 years of hard rocking with Congregation of the Damned; Wolfmother return from the brink of demise with Cosmic Egg; and restless jam-rocker Warren Haynes returns to Gov’t Mule for their first in 3 years, By A Thread.

The Blind Boys of Alabama’s Duets features couplings, or rather, septuplings with Bonnie Raitt, Ben Harper, Lou Reed and Solomon Burke.

And three boxed sets to highlight: Dolly is a 4 CD, 101 track strut through the career of buxom Country cutie Dolly Parton; Kenny Rogers: The First 50 Years is 3 CDs and 45 tracks from the king of middle-of-the-road Country and maker of fine rotisserie chicken; and Unlimited is a 5 disc feast of smooth soul from the late Barry White, with many rare tracks.

For all intents and purposes, there’s really only one essential, crowd-pleasing movie release in this week’s FOXLight DVD release roundup.

And the other studios must agree…’cause they’ve given no competition to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Shia LeBeouf and the omnipresent, and aptly-named Megan Fox return in a sequel built around the idea of “More”. More action! More robots! More explosions! Also, More bad reviews! than the first one, yet it made More money! virtually assuring there will be More Transformers! in the future.

While the guys are salivating over Autobots and Decepticons, the ladies can grab Cheri, which reunited Michelle Pfeiffer with Dangerous Liasons director Stephen Frears in another period piece where fifty and fabulous Pfeiffer shows young Rupert Friend how to treat a lady. Lucky lad.

Leonard Cohen: Live at the Isle of Wight, a DVD and CD combo covering Cohen’s set at the 1970 festival (which followed a legendary turn by one Jimi Hendrix) with a documentary on the DVD and the full performance on the CD.

Tina: Live covers Tina Turner’s a March 2009 show filmed in Holland, plus edited highlights on the included CD.

The Michael Jackson cash-in sweepstakes continue with The Remix Suite, a collection of [solo and Jackson 5] Motown-era tracks remixed by The Neptunes, Akon and Paul Oakenfold.

German metalists Rammstein heavily drop their latest, titled Liebe Ist Für Alle Da.

Funny folkies Flight of the Conchords return with their second season roundup I Told You I Was Freaky.

Colour Me Free is Joss Stone’s latest, with guests from Jeff Beck to Nas, and is a Target and iTunes exclusive.

Sandra Bullock kicks off this week’s FOXLight DVD Release roundup with her latest cookie-cutter romantic comedy The Proposal. In it, Bullock is a book editor facing deportation to Canada, and in a last ditch effort to remain in the states, she decides to fake an engagement to her assistant, Ryan Reynolds. It’s basically a sitcom plot device stretched to 100 minutes, and features help from sitcom stalwarts Betty White and Craig T. Nelson.

70’s puppet/live action hit Land of The Lost gets a flawed update from the usually dependable Will Ferrell. In an attempt to appeal to the Judd Apatow crowd, a family friendly cult hit becomes a raunchy adult-oriented action-comedy miss.

Spiderman director Sam Raimi returns to horror with Drag Me To Hell. Alison Lohman is a loan officer who causes an elderly woman to get evicted, and a curse dooms her to Hell in 72 hours.

Nia Vardalos goes back to Greece as a tour guide who finds love with a scruffy Alexis Georgoulis in My Life In Ruins. Richard Dreyfuss co-stars as a tourist who shows her the Greek-God light.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil brings the idea of Spinal Tap full circle.. This rockumentary follows the self-proclaimed “demigods of Canadian metal” on a last-ditch comeback effort. Comparisons to This Is Spinal Tap are obvious…the drummer is named Robb Reiner, after all…but these guys are for real, and influenced Slayer, Anthrax, and Metallica.

Disney classic numero uno, Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs gets cleaned up and remastered yet again, this time in a two-disc Blu-Ray/DVD combo.
