A real, um, fake American hero leads this week’s FOXLight DVD release roundup.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra brings the action figure crew to celluloid, with Channing Tatum as Duke and Marlon Wayans as Ripcord, in pursuit of the evil Cobra, the evil organization out to destroy the world, while under the command of Dennis Quaid as General Hawk.  Game on!

Needless remake The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 has John Travolta as the gang leader who takes a NYC subway train hostage, and Denzel Washington as the dispatcher who tries to bring him down.  Seek out the 1974 original, with Robert Shaw and Walter Matthau instead.  You’ll thank me.

And knee-high alien invaders are being battled by kids on a family vacation, all under the nose of their clueless parents, in Aliens In The Attic.

I Love You, Beth Cooper follows Paul Rust as a high school valedictorian who spent his entire educational career playing it safe and boring…right up till the end, when he finally professes his love for Hayden Panettiere. Then all the bad gets unleashed.  Also starring Cynthia Stevenson and co-star of another coming-of-age flick, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’s Alan Ruck.

Weezer return with Raditude, a decidedly more pop/less rock-oriented effort.

Glee: The Music – Season One, Volume 1, features the hit show’s cast’s take on classics originally by Neil Diamond and Journey.

NCIS: The Official TV Soundtrack, Vol. 2, unearths an unreleased Bob Dylan track from the ‘60s.

Foo Fighters’ Greatest Hits looks back on 15 years of hits plus 2 new tracks.

Andrea Bocelli’s in the holiday mood with My Christmas, his first such endeavor with an eclectic roster of guests from Mary J. Blige to The Muppets.

Frank Sinatra: New York is a 4 CD/1 DVD box of previously unreleased performances recorded in the Empire State between 1955 and 1990.

Creedence Clearwater Revival’s The Singles Collection is 30 tracks in their original single mixes, a first on CD, plus a bonus DVD.

And two classic Devo albums get Deluxe Edition treatments: 1978’s Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! And 1980’s Freedom of Choice, both expanded with tons of live bonus tracks.

The family hit of this past summer leads this week’s pack of DVD releases in the FOXLight.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs has the pre-historic creatures voiced by Ray Romano, Denis Leary and John Leguizamo entering the Jurassic period with a pack of cranky-but-cute dinosaurs with the voices of Simon Pegg and Seann William Scott among others.  And the result was almost a billion dollars in worldwide box office.

Orphan is everyone’s adoption nightmare come to celluloid. Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga suffer a miscarriage, and decide to adopt instead. And darling little Isabelle Fuhrman arrives to inject a little Hell in their lives.

Nothing Like the Holidays follows the Rodriguez family’s holiday trials and tribulations on the occasion of a family reunion where, of course, nothing goes smoothly. Starring John Leguizamo, Freddy Rodriguez and Luis Guzman.

Also out this week…

Larry David curbs his enthusiasm for Woody Allen, in Whatever Works. This time out Allen stays behind the camera and places David front and center as what has become the mainstay protagonist of Allen’s recent work: the cranky old guy who has a cute, young girl improbably fall in love with him.  Evan Rachel Wood is the girl, and the premise is, once again, a head-shaker.

Live albums from four decades of hit masters: the 70’s are covered by Stephen Stills’ Live at Shepherd’s Bush Empire, a CD/DVD combo captured last year; 80’s and 90’s rockers R.E.M. drop Live at the Olympia, covering a 2007 Dublin show on 2 CDs; and the double-0’s are represented, softly, by Jack Johnson with En Concert, a compilation of shows from the past couple of years.

Brian McKnight returns to the recording studio from the radio studio with Evolution of a Man.

What Will We Be is the existentially titled latest from folk-rocker Devandra Banhart.

The Rock banner is flown high by this cross-genre trio: Atreyu celebrate 10 years of hard rocking with Congregation of the Damned; Wolfmother return from the brink of demise with Cosmic Egg; and restless jam-rocker Warren Haynes returns to Gov’t Mule for their first in 3 years, By A Thread.

And three boxed sets to highlight: Dolly is a 4 CD, 101 track strut through the career of buxom Country cutie Dolly Parton; Kenny Rogers: The First 50 Years is 3 CDs and 45 tracks from the king of middle-of-the-road Country and maker of fine rotisserie chicken; and Unlimited is a 5 disc feast of smooth soul from the late Barry White, with many rare tracks.

For all intents and purposes, there’s really only one essential, crowd-pleasing movie release in this week’s FOXLight DVD release roundup.

And the other studios must agree…’cause they’ve given no competition to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Shia LeBeouf and the omnipresent, and aptly-named Megan Fox return in a sequel built around the idea of “More”. More action! More robots! More explosions! Also, More bad reviews! than the first one, yet it made More money! virtually assuring there will be More Transformers! in the future.

While the guys are salivating over Autobots and Decepticons, the ladies can grab Cheri, which reunited Michelle Pfeiffer with Dangerous Liasons director Stephen Frears in another period piece where fifty and fabulous Pfeiffer shows young Rupert Friend how to treat a lady. Lucky lad.

Leonard Cohen: Live at the Isle of Wight, a DVD and CD combo covering Cohen’s set at the 1970 festival (which followed a legendary turn by one Jimi Hendrix) with a documentary on the DVD and the full performance on the CD.

Jethro Tull: Live at Madison Square Garden 1978, a DVD/CD combo chronicling a concert held dear by Tull fans for over 30 years.

Tina: Live covers Tina Turner’s a March 2009 show filmed in Holland, plus edited highlights on the included CD.

Double Down Live is a 2 DVD affair from ZZ Top. Disc 1 is a 1980 Deguello-era show filmed in Holland, and Disc 2 covers recent shows filmed at various venues last year.

German metalists Rammstein heavily drop their latest, titled Liebe Ist Für Alle Da.

111 years Of Deutsche Grammophon is a limited edition 55 disc boxed set of seminal releases from the classical label, and is being billed as “a miniature musical reference library”.

Sandra Bullock kicks off this week’s FOXLight DVD Release roundup with her latest cookie-cutter romantic comedy The Proposal. In it, Bullock is a book editor facing deportation to Canada, and in a last ditch effort to remain in the states, she decides to fake an engagement to her assistant, Ryan Reynolds. It’s basically a sitcom plot device stretched to 100 minutes, and features help from sitcom stalwarts Betty White and Craig T. Nelson.

70’s puppet/live action hit Land of The Lost gets a flawed update from the usually dependable Will Ferrell. In an attempt to appeal to the Judd Apatow crowd, a family friendly cult hit becomes a raunchy adult-oriented action-comedy miss.

Spiderman director Sam Raimi returns to horror with Drag Me To Hell. Alison Lohman is a loan officer who causes an elderly woman to get evicted, and a curse dooms her to Hell in 72 hours.

And The Rod Stewart Sessions: 1971-1998 features an alternate history of his career. 63 tracks on 4 CDs, all of them outtakes, alternates or unreleased.

Comedies, romantic and absurdist, lead off this week’s roundup of DVD releases in the FOXLight.

On the romantic side, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past has Matthew McConaughey as a celebrity photog whose callous approach to loving and leaving prompts a visit from the ghosts of his former girlfriends, lead by Jennifer Garner, to show him the errors of his ways. Also starring Breckin Meyer, and in a pseudo Fatal Attraction reunion, Anne Archer and Michael Douglas.

And if Paul Blart was the lovable, huggable mall cop, Seth Rogen’s Ronnie Barnhardt is his bizarro-twin in Observe and Report. Rogen’s dark and delusional take as a mall cop bent on nabbing a flasher in the hopes of defeating real cop Ray Liotta, and winning dream girl Anna Faris in the process, is indeed the sunny Blart’s polar opposite.

Also out this week…

Two big Blu-Ray scores for Star Trek fans! Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection has the four movies with Patrick Stewart and the TNG gang, Generations, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis, plus a bonus disc, in all their uncompressed Blu-Ray glory.

And Star Trek, The Original Series: Season Two features all the second season episodes with William Shatner at the Enterprise helm, also in Blu-Ray quality, and each episode appears in its original form plus a new version with updated CGI visual effects. Live long and prosper.

Draw The Line is the latest from David Gray, with a guest shot by former Eurythmic Annie Lennox.

Harry Connick, Jr.’s latest, Your Songs, is a collection of cover songs requested by his fans, including tracks made popular by Elvis, The Beatles, Elton John and Billy Joel.

Glam-rocker Mika returns with The Boy Who Knew Too Much.

And a three-pack of new Rock from Brand New, rockingly titled Daisy; Life Starts Now, the latest from Three Days Grace; and Five Finger Death Punch drop War Is The Answer.

The late Dan Fogelberg recorded an album a year before his death, locked it in a vault, and asked his wife to release it after his death. Its time is now, and it’s titled Love In Time.

Stephen Stills went back to the vault and dug up 15 unreleased tracks from his time with Manassas for a collection called Pieces.

Los Lobos Goes Disney is an Amazon.com exclusive collection of tracks from classic Disney movies given the eclectic Los Lobos treatment.

Between My Head and the Sky is the latest sonic assault from Yoko Ono and her Plastic Ono Band, now a family affair including son Sean Lennon.

And in reissue-land this week, we have the last truly groundbreaking Beastie Boys album, 1998’s Hello Nasty, now expanded with a second disc of outtakes and remixes.

Ray Charles classic 1960 concept album The Genius Hits The Road gets expanded with 7 bonus tracks in the same road-trip vain.

Where The Action Is! Los Angeles Nuggets: 1965-1968 is the latest Rhino collection of well-known and lesser-known rock tracks, this time 101 of them from L.A. based bands crammed onto 4 CDs.

It’s like the attack of the classic rockers in this week’s FOXLight Music Release roundup, with lotsa new music from vintage acts.

Mark Knopfler, still resoundingly NOT in Dire Straits, returns with solo album number 5, Get Lucky.

Endgame is the latest crack of heavy metal thunder from Megadeth.

Former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley drops a sonic boom of his own, Anomaly.

Bruce Hornsby returns to more pop-oriented fare with Levitate, an album he says is his first “with no piano solos.”

The more current side of rock is represented by the latest from Muse titled The Resistance; and The Incident, a double disc effort from Porcupine Tree.

Actress Scarlett Johansson joins with singer-songwriter Pete Yorn for Break Up, an album of duets recorded in 2006.

Also out this week…

Kid Cudi’s debut is titled Man On The Moon: The End Of The Day, co-produced by his mentor (and huge fan of Taylor Swift’s videos), Kanye West.

Happy Hour marks the return of Kid Rock disciple Uncle Kracker, and joining him is a diverse roster including Kenny Chesney, Boyz II Men, and 70’s soft rock falsetto Leo Sayer.

Singer-songwriter Mason Jennings drops the introspective Blood of a Man.

Chair In The Doorway is the first new music in five years from Living Colour.

Mi Plan is the first all-Spanish language effort from Nelly Furtado.

Blues legend John Mayall drops his 57th album, Tough.

And the big catalog release this week is the long-awaited boxed set from cult power-poppers Big Star titled Keep An Eye On The Sky, a colossal 98 tracks on 4 CDs, many of which are previously unreleased, and all of which should serve as an appropriate introduction and coda to the music of Chris Bell and Alex Chilton.
