A fake musical within a real TV series leads the week’s music releases in the FOXLight. If you followed that, then you’re a fan of NBC’s Smash, and Bombshell: The New Marilyn Musical from Smash features tracks from the fake show sung by the very real Katherine McPhee, Megan Hilty and Bernadette Peters…

Temper Temper is the latest slab of metal from Bullet For My Valentine…

British rockers The Virginmarys return with their sophomore effort King of Conflict…

Gregg Allman’s son Devon Allman snared Stevie Ray Vaughan-producer Jim Gaines for his blues rockin’ solo debut Turquoise…

Bryan Ferry recasts some of his favorite solo and Roxy Music tracks in the style of Boardwalk Empire-era jazz instrumentals on The Jazz Age, credited to the Bryan Ferry Orchestra…

Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison aim to be the new Johnny & June, but merged with some punk attitude, on Cheater’s Game…

Christian pop artist Jeremy Camp follows up his recent Christmas and Greatest Hits albums with the all-new Reckless…

Nataly Dawn, one half of YouTube sensations Pomplamoose goes solo, with production help from the other half, Jack Conte, on How I Knew Her…

The third album from the Foals arrives, Holy Fire…

Sass Jordan and Brian Tichy team up as S.U.N. or Something Under Nothing, which is also the title of their rocking debut…

Legendary prog-rockers (and occasional yodel-ers) Focus bring some new hocus pocus on X, their first new album since 2006…

Blues man Otis Taylor offers up his latest, My World Is Gone, a song cycle on the plight of Native Americans…

Jazz heads can seek out Pat Metheny‘s The Orchestrion Project, which features a live set documenting his computer controlled mini orchestra which responds to the touch of his guitar…or the more traditional sounds of sax man Dave Koz on his very first live album, Live at the Blue Note Tokyo.

On the Reissue Front…

Joni Mitchell‘s The Studio Albums 1968-1979, originally released as a UK-only set last year, arrives stateside containing, as advertised, her first ten albums from Song to a Seagull through Mingus…

The Allman Brothers Band rolls out a couple more self-released, limited edition treasures from their extensive live archives, specifically Macon City Auditorium, Macon, GA 2/11/72 and Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY 5/1/73…or if you just want to hear the old stuff the way you remember it, in their original studio versions, grab the just-released ICON best-of…

INXS‘s 1982 Shabooh Shoobah and 1984′s The Swing get married together on one newly-remastered, limited edition disc from Friday Music…

And we end with a wrap-up of several reissue labels that have some pretty spectacular (and packed) release schedules this week:

Omnivore Recordings continue their stellar country and rockabilly vault releases with Merle Haggard‘s The Complete ’60s Capitol Singles, 14 hit singles and their B-sides…Wanda Jackson‘s The Best of the Classic Capitol Singles, 29 of them to be exact…and George Jones‘ The Complete United Artists Solo Singles, 32 slabs of classic twang…

Wounded Bird flies through some great, lost ’70s and early ’80s soul/funk/jazz with a 1974 solo outing from former Stax-man Booker T., Evergreen, now with six bonus tracks…In The Beginning: The World of Aretha Franklin, the 1972 compilation of 20 tracks from the Queen of Soul’s pre-Atlantic Records stint at Columbia Records…Alberta Hunter‘s 1978 soundtrack to the film Remember My Name…a 1983 outing from legendary jazz sax-and-flute man Hubert Laws, Make It Last, now fortified with an unreleased bonus track…and making its worldwide CD debut, Redbone‘s 1974 trippy Beaded Dreams Through Turquoise Eyes which adds six bonus tracks…

And Real Gone Music goes all over the musical map with Borderline‘s first two albums remastered in one package: 1972′s Sweet Dreams and Quiet Desires and 1973′s The Second Album…Sam Dees‘ 1975 The Show Must Go On…Kenny O’Dell’s 1967 salvo Beautiful People…Pozo Seco‘s Shades of Time from 1968, now with 11 additional bonus cuts…Sam (the Sham) Samudio‘s 1971 solo shot Hard and Heavy…Billy Joe Shaver‘s entire stint on the Red label on 2 CDs, The Complete Columbia Recordings…and prog-rocker Rick Wakeman‘s 1976 album, the other-worldly No Earthly Connection.

The top music reissues of 2012 are in the FOXLight…

Many album favorites got gloriously expanded: Pink Floyd, who set the standard with their Immersion Edition campaign continued with The Wall…The 25th Anniversaries of Paul Simon’s Graceland, Peter Gabriel’s So and Michael Jackson’s Bad were recognized with extra tracks galore…Paul McCartney pulled out all the stops for RAM’s 40th birthday…and more recent classics like Rage Against The Machine’s debut and Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness also added copious goodies…

Frank Zappa fans got much needed remasters of his entire catalog…Complete Albums collections arrived for Bill Withers, Johnny Cash and The English Beat…and Joni Mitchell’s classic Studio Albums from ’68 to ’79 got boxed up as well…

The vinyl revival continued in full force with all the Studio Albums by The Beatles and The Who getting re-waxed on 180 gram audiophile-grade vinyl…

The seemingly endless well of Elvis Presley reissues saw two eras revisited: his Sun Studios recordings got cleaned up and expanded to include almost every note on A Boy From Tupelo…and Prince From Another Planet gave his 1972 Madison Square Garden shows a remix and added fan shot footage of the event…

Speaking of remixes: Jethro Tull’s Thick As A Brick and KISS’s Destroyer each got sparkling new mixes from Steven Wilson and Bob Ezrin, respectively…

And never before released goodies arrived from Carole King, who dug up some Legendary Demos…and Krautrock pioneers Can cleaned out their vaults on The Lost Tapes.

New releases and reissues coverage returns next week, as the music industry machine reboots after its holiday nap.
