A real, um, fake American hero leads this week’s FOXLight DVD release roundup.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra brings the action figure crew to celluloid, with Channing Tatum as Duke and Marlon Wayans as Ripcord, in pursuit of the evil Cobra, the evil organization out to destroy the world, while under the command of Dennis Quaid as General Hawk. Game on!

Needless remake The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 has John Travolta as the gang leader who takes a NYC subway train hostage, and Denzel Washington as the dispatcher who tries to bring him down. Seek out the 1974 original, with Robert Shaw and Walter Matthau instead. You’ll thank me.

And knee-high alien invaders are being battled by kids on a family vacation, all under the nose of their clueless parents, in Aliens In The Attic.

Also out this week…

I Love You, Beth Cooper follows Paul Rust as a high school valedictorian who spent his entire educational career playing it safe and boring…right up till the end, when he finally professes his love for Hayden Panettiere. Then all the bad gets unleashed. Also starring Cynthia Stevenson and co-star of another coming-of-age flick, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’s Alan Ruck.

And TV shows premiering on DVD this week include:

Animated Star Wars filler The Clone Wars: Complete Season 1

Animated Disney classic Zorro: The Complete 1st Season, and Zorro: The Complete 2nd Season, each in limited edition collector’s tins

Comedy classic Here’s Lucy: Season 2

The tape can finally self-destruct, with Mission: Impossible: The 7th and Final Season

The Rockford Files: The Movie Collection, Vol. 1 collects 4 post-series reunion movies, with James Garner as the iconic anti-hero

Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…: Season 1, the IFC cable interview show with guests including Elton John, Norah Jones and The Police

And two very different complete series sets: rough and raw crime drama The Shield: The Complete Series Collection; and Jim Henson’s other furry crew of oddballs Fraggle Rock: Complete Series Collection

And for something slightly less different, though nonetheless equally entertaining, get this report along with this week’s music releases in one deluxe sized podcast for FREE here: http://feeds.foxnewsradio.com/thefoxlight. Or sample it via the player at the top of this post.

The family hit of this past summer leads this week’s pack of DVD releases in the FOXLight.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs has the pre-historic creatures voiced by Ray Romano, Denis Leary and John Leguizamo entering the Jurassic period with a pack of cranky-but-cute dinosaurs with the voices of Simon Pegg and Seann William Scott among others. And the result was almost a billion dollars in worldwide box office.

Orphan is everyone’s adoption nightmare come to celluloid. Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga suffer a miscarriage, and decide to adopt instead. And darling little Isabelle Fuhrman arrives to inject a little Hell in their lives.

Nothing Like the Holidays follows the Rodriguez family’s holiday trials and tribulations on the occasion of a family reunion where, of course, nothing goes smoothly. Starring John Leguizamo, Freddy Rodriguez and Luis Guzman.

Also out this week…

Larry David curbs his enthusiasm for Woody Allen, in Whatever Works. This time out Allen stays behind the camera and places David front and center as what has become the mainstay protagonist of Allen’s recent work: the cranky old guy who has a cute, young girl improbably fall in love with him. Evan Rachel Wood is the girl, and the premise is, once again, a head-shaker.

And TV on DVD this week includes:

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, the latest installment of the sci-fi smash, starring Edward James Olmos

Simon Baker in The Guardian: Season 1

Classic creep-out anthology Tales From The Darkside: Season 2

Classic action dramas Mannix: Season 3 and The Fugitive: Season 3, Vol. 1

And, for something completely different, a gaggle of Monty Python releases including the just aired multi-part documentary Monty Python: Almost the Truth (The Lawyers’ Cut); the pre-Python documentary Monty Python: The Other British Invasion; and The Best of Monty Python: 40th Anniversary, featuring many classic skits.

Rod Stewart has covered classic pop, rock, and now soul with Soulbook, a collection of stone soul classics with guests Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, and Mary J. Blige.

Sandra Bullock kicks off this week’s FOXLight DVD Release roundup with her latest cookie-cutter romantic comedy The Proposal. In it, Bullock is a book editor facing deportation to Canada, and in a last ditch effort to remain in the states, she decides to fake an engagement to her assistant, Ryan Reynolds. It’s basically a sitcom plot device stretched to 100 minutes, and features help from sitcom stalwarts Betty White and Craig T. Nelson.

70’s puppet/live action hit Land of The Lost gets a flawed update from the usually dependable Will Ferrell. In an attempt to appeal to the Judd Apatow crowd, a family friendly cult hit becomes a raunchy adult-oriented action-comedy miss.

Spiderman director Sam Raimi returns to horror with Drag Me To Hell. Alison Lohman is a loan officer who causes an elderly woman to get evicted, and a curse dooms her to Hell in 72 hours.

Also out this week…

TV Shows premiering on DVD include:

The original and preferable Land Of The Lost: Seasons 1, 2, and 3

Canadian import Flashpoint: Season 1

FOX-TV’s first hit Married…with Children: Season 11 (The Final Season)

The unexcavated, for better or worse, Jackass: The Lost Tapes

And Complete Series sets featuring every single episode of Futurama: The Complete Collection and British import/Adult Swimmers The Mighty Boosh: The Complete Series, Special Edition

Of course, you can hear all this stuff in the FOXLight Podcast, either by clicking on the embedded player up at the top of this post, or you can take it [me] with you by downloading or subscribing here: http://feeds.foxnewsradio.com/thefoxlight.
If Bob Dylan says it’s the holiday season, who are we to argue in this week’s FOXLight Music Release roundup? Zimmy’s first holiday album Christmas In The Heart is his 47th album overall and all current and future royalties are being donated to the charity Feeding America.

Other natural-born Jewish boys going Christmas this week are Neil Diamond with A Cherry Cherry Christmas, and Barry Manilow’s In The Swing of Christmas, a 2007 limited release now available everywhere.

Slice is the latest soft-rocker from the John Ondrasik-led Five For Fighting.

Embryonic is the latest psychedelic freak-out from The Flaming Lips.

50 years of movie music is boiled down to 12 tracks sung by pop-vocalist extraordinaire Linda Eder on Soundtrack.

Also out this week…

Harper Simon, son of Paul steps into the spotlight on his self-titled debut, and proves he’s more than just a chip off the old man’s block.

R&B smoothy Mario returns with D.N.A., and help from a large roster of producers from Babyface to Tricky Stewart.

The Brian Setzer Orchestra return with Songs From Lonely Avenue, a film-noir based imaginary soundtrack of sorts.

Hall and Oates finally get a proper boxed set career retrospective with Do What You Want, Be Who You Are: The Music of Daryl Hall and John Oates. 74 tracks on 4 CDs, 16 of which are previously unreleased.

Joan Baez: How Sweet The Sound is the sonic counterpart to a PBS “American Masters” documentary on the iconic folk-singer, and features many rare and unreleased performances.

The Righteous Brothers Definitive Collection is just that…21 tracks spanning their Phil Spector-produced heyday and beyond.

And bookending this roundup with even more holiday releases out this week, we have new albums like David Archuleta’s Christmas From The Heart, Sugarland’s Gold and Green, and Charlie Daniels’ Joy To The World: A Bluegrass Christmas; and classics like Mannheim Steamroller Christmas: 25th Anniversary Collection, The Jackson 5 Ultimate Christmas Collection, and The Ultimate Motown Christmas Collection.

Of course, it’s like Christmas every week with the FOXLight Podcast acting as your shopping list.
Toby Keith and Roseanne Cash lend a country twang to this week’s FOXLight Music Release roundup.

Toby’s American Ride features jazzy assistance from Dave Koz and Marcus Miller.

Roseanne’s The List is a covers album based on a list of 100 important songs her father Johnny Cash gave her, with high profile help from Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen.

Sonic Boom is the first new music in 11 years from KISS, actually a disc of new music, a disc of remakes, and a live DVD, and it’s only available at Wal-Mart.

Kraut-rockers Tokio Hotel drop their latest Humanoid in English and German language versions.

Crazy Love is the latest from swing-meister Michael Buble, with one track a duet with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings.

Also out this week…

Uber-producer Rick Rubin has two very different projects: singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile’s latest Give Up The Ghost with an assist from Elton John; and Music For Men, the major label debut of gender-bending punkers The Gossip.

Backstreet’s back…consider yourself warned. This Is Us is the Backstreet Boys‘ latest attempt to become relevant Backstreet Men.

With Aerosmith having more group members on the D.L. than the New York Mets, Joe Perry goes solo for the fifth time with Have Guitar, Will Travel.

French Electronicats Air also drop their fifth album, Love 2

Gospel stars BeBe and CeCe Winans keep it in the family once again for Still.

Rascal Flatts collect themselves on Greatest Hits, Vol. 1, 13 hits plus a live EP.

The Definitive Vince Guaraldi is the first 2 CD anthology of the Peanuts-pianist. 31 tracks, and more than just the Charlie Brown ones.

Duran Duran revisits their classic Rio and adds a second disc of much sought-after B-sides and longer “Night Versions”.

Finally, can you smell the pumpkin pie? Feel that autumn crisp in the air? Well, it must be time for Christmas albums then, right? This week’s round includes Ray Charles’ The Spirit of Christmas, Dean Martin’s My Kind of Christmas, and Christmas With Sinatra & Friends, which is a new comp featuring Frank’s classic holiday fare mixed with similar sounding tracks from Mel Torme, Tony Bennett and Ray Charles with Betty Carter.

Jack Black and Michael Cera are Neanderthal numbskulls in this week’s FOXLight DVD Release roundup. As hunter-gatherers, the unlikely duo are primitive as can be in the evolutionary send-up Year One. Joining on their epic journey is House’s Olivia Wilde, David Cross and Hank Azaria.

Eddie Murphy continues his dalliance with family fare as a businessman whose flagging career causes a life re-evaluation in Imagine That. Murphy then finds solace and salvation in his daughter’s imaginary world. Look for a reunion with Beverly Hills Cop co-star Ronny Cox.

Nia Vardalos goes back to Greece as a tour guide who finds love with a scruffy Alexis Georgoulis in My Life In Ruins. Richard Dreyfuss co-stars as a tourist who shows her the Greek-God light.

Also out this week…

Anvil! The Story of Anvil brings the idea of Spinal Tap full circle.. This rockumentary follows the self-proclaimed “demigods of Canadian metal” on a last-ditch comeback effort. Comparisons to This Is Spinal Tap are obvious…the drummer is named Robb Reiner, after all…but these guys are for real, and influenced Slayer, Anthrax, and Metallica.

Disney classic numero uno, Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs gets cleaned up and remastered yet again, this time in a two-disc Blu-Ray/DVD combo.

Currently airing on PBS, Ken Burns: National Parks – America’s Best Idea is the docu-King’s latest undertaking, surveying the national park system in six parts, 12 hours, with the help of Adam Arkin, Peter Coyote and Andy Garcia.

And TV shows premiering on DVD this week include:

David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel in Bones: Season 4

Patricia Arquette in Medium: Season 5

Cable pseudo-reality hit The Hills: Season 5, Part 1

The soon to return Nip/Tuck: Season 5, Part 2

The long-awaited DVD debut of Ally McBeal: Season 1

And comedy classics Get Smart: Season 4, Mr. Ed: Season 1, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show: Season 5

Computer animation plus big-named voice talent equals a monster hit in this week’s FOXLight DVD release roundup.

Monsters vs. Aliens features a woman voiced by Reese Witherspoon getting hit with gunk from outer space and growing almost 50 feet tall. Captured and labeled a monster, she discovers other outerworldly beings with the voices of Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie, and Keifer Sutherland.

John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph are about to have a baby and decide to travel the United States to find the perfect place to raise their family in Away We Go, a quirky comedy from American Beauty director Sam Mendes.

And the 70th Anniversary of The Wizard of Oz is celebrated in your choice of a 2 DVD set, or a 4-disc Blu-Ray Ultimate Collectors set.

Also out this week…

Kevin Spacey is a Hollywood psychiatrist in the aptly titled Shrink. We get to eavesdrop on his A-list head cases including Saffron Burrows, Robin Williams and Griffin Dunne. But of course, he could use some time on a couch himself.

The Girlfriend Experience is a Steven Soderbergh film about a high-caliber New York call-girl, played by real-life porn actress Sasha Grey in her first mainstream role, who offers the social companionship and appearance of a real relationship in addition to the carnal benefits.

And TV on DVD this week includes:

CSI: NY – Season 5

How I Met Your Mother: Season 4

The Unit: Season 4

And Complete Series sets, featuring every single episode of the season-one-and-done Kings, DayBreak, and the U.S. version of Life On Mars, as well as cartoons He-Man and the Masters Of The Universe, and the Real Ghostbusters.

Three divas lead off this week’s FOXLight music release roundup, and it doesn’t get any bigger than them.

Mariah Carey drops her much-delayed Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.

Madonna finishes her career-long Warner Bros. contract with the 36 track double-disc best of Celebration.

And arguably the Queen Diva, Barbra Streisand releases her first straight-up Jazz album, produced by Diana Krall, Love Is The Answer.

Brand New Eyes marks the return of Paramore, with diva-in-training Hayley Williams.

Revolution is the latest from Country diva, Miranda Lambert.

Alice In Chains brings in new vocalist William DuVall and guest Elton John for their first since 1995, Black Gives Way To Blue.

And, new Rock is represented loudly by AFI with Crash Love; and Breaking Benjamin with Dear Agony.

Also out this week…

New music from Classic Rock stalwarts: Foreigner adds new singer Kelly Hansen for the Wal-Mart exclusive Can’t Slow Down, a disc of new music, a disc of remixed greatest hits, and a DVD of live performances plus a behind-the-scenes documentary.

And, Lynyrd Skynyrd regroup after the loss of keyboardist Billy Powell with God and Guns, and an eclectic guest line-up featuring Jerry Douglas and Rob Zombie.

Ska-legends Madness return to original producers Langer and Winstanley for their first since 1999, The Liberty of Norton Folgate.

Big & Rich put the cap on the bottle of their career together with Greatest Hits.

Kris Kristofferson teams up with uber-producer Don Was for Closer to the Bone, his first since 2006.

Elvis Costello: Live at the El Mocambo finally gets a legit release. Formerly a radio-only promo, it highlights a hot 1978 show at the Toronto club.

And two boxed sets round us out: Genesis: Live 1973-2007 features all their live albums plus Live at the Rainbow 1973 in remixed stereo and surround sound on 8 CDs and 3 DVDs.

And The Rod Stewart Sessions: 1971-1998 features an alternate history of his career. 63 tracks on 4 CDs, all of them outtakes, alternates or unreleased.

Don’t forget about the FOXLight Podcast, available for download or subscription here: http://feeds.foxnewsradio.com/thefoxlight, or just listen at the link up top.
Comedies, romantic and absurdist, lead off this week’s roundup of DVD releases in the FOXLight.

On the romantic side, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past has Matthew McConaughey as a celebrity photog whose callous approach to loving and leaving prompts a visit from the ghosts of his former girlfriends, lead by Jennifer Garner, to show him the errors of his ways. Also starring Breckin Meyer, and in a pseudo Fatal Attraction reunion, Anne Archer and Michael Douglas.

And if Paul Blart was the lovable, huggable mall cop, Seth Rogen’s Ronnie Barnhardt is his bizarro-twin in Observe and Report. Rogen’s dark and delusional take as a mall cop bent on nabbing a flasher in the hopes of defeating real cop Ray Liotta, and winning dream girl Anna Faris in the process, is indeed the sunny Blart’s polar opposite.

Also out this week…

Two big Blu-Ray scores for Star Trek fans! Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection has the four movies with Patrick Stewart and the TNG gang, Generations, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis, plus a bonus disc, in all their uncompressed Blu-Ray glory.

And Star Trek, The Original Series: Season Two features all the second season episodes with William Shatner at the Enterprise helm, also in Blu-Ray quality, and each episode appears in its original form plus a new version with updated CGI visual effects. Live long and prosper.

And other TV shows premiering on DVD this week include:

30 Rock: Season 3

Castle: Season 1

Ghost Whisperer: Season 4

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit – Season 10

The Mentalist: Season 1

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles – Season 2

Ugly Betty: Season 3

After a four-year wait, classic comedy Taxi: Season 4 finally gets released.

And Spongebob Squarepants: The First 100 Episodes collects the first 5 seasons of the hit Nickelodeon cartoon.

And, as always, all this info, plus all this week’s music releases, is available in podcast form in the embedded player at the top of this post, or you can take it with you by subscribing here: http://feeds.foxnewsradio.com/thefoxlight [Incidentally, we are quite aware there have been "issues" getting the podcast and this blog to link up correctly...our webmeister general is working on these issues diligently.
It’s like the attack of the classic rockers in this week’s FOXLight Music Release roundup, with lotsa new music from vintage acts.

Mark Knopfler, still resoundingly NOT in Dire Straits, returns with solo album number 5, Get Lucky.

Endgame is the latest crack of heavy metal thunder from Megadeth.

Former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley drops a sonic boom of his own, Anomaly.

Bruce Hornsby returns to more pop-oriented fare with Levitate, an album he says is his first “with no piano solos.”

The more current side of rock is represented by the latest from Muse titled The Resistance; and The Incident, a double disc effort from Porcupine Tree.

Actress Scarlett Johansson joins with singer-songwriter Pete Yorn for Break Up, an album of duets recorded in 2006.

Also out this week…

Kid Cudi’s debut is titled Man On The Moon: The End Of The Day, co-produced by his mentor (and huge fan of Taylor Swift’s videos), Kanye West.

Happy Hour marks the return of Kid Rock disciple Uncle Kracker, and joining him is a diverse roster including Kenny Chesney, Boyz II Men, and 70’s soft rock falsetto Leo Sayer.

Singer-songwriter Mason Jennings drops the introspective Blood of a Man.

Chair In The Doorway is the first new music in five years from Living Colour.

Mi Plan is the first all-Spanish language effort from Nelly Furtado.

Blues legend John Mayall drops his 57th album, Tough.

And the big catalog release this week is the long-awaited boxed set from cult power-poppers Big Star titled Keep An Eye On The Sky, a colossal 98 tracks on 4 CDs, many of which are previously unreleased, and all of which should serve as an appropriate introduction and coda to the music of Chris Bell and Alex Chilton.
