Amanda Knox, the American convicted four years ago of killing her British roommate while studying abroad in Italy, is a free woman.  The 24-year-old had her conviction overturned by an appeals panel after questions arose about the integrity of the evidence against her and an overzealous prosecutor, who faces his own troubles over abuse of power.

The verdict lit up the Twittersphere, and the story has kept people tweeting and talking.  For some there’s questions, like who killed Meredith Kerchner?  @Marcotti has the answer to that…

Is there trouble in spotlight-seeking paradise?  White House crasher Tareq Salahi calls 9-1-1, saying his wife’s been kidnapped, that she’s supposed to be in northern Virginia, but called from an Oregon area code.  Cops say they called the number, she was calm and said she was with a good friend, where she wanted to be, and that she didn’t want Tareq to know where that is.  According to TMZ, the where is on the road…with a rock band…  Yup, that’s right, they report that Journey’s rep confirmed she’s with that good friend – guitarist Neal Schon.  She apparently ran off to Nashville Tuesday night to see Schon, and they’re together in Memphis, where the band performs tonight.  @Flamestitch was never buying the camera-craving couple’s story…

Starting with the weakest of the storms, but the most current threat.  Tropical Storm Lee is lashing the Gulf Coast with heavy rains and some gusty winds.  Some of the biggest concerns were for flooding in New Orleans, not far from where Lee made landfall.  That’s where FOX’s Casey Stegall is. A little piece of good news, though—levees and pumps are working, keeping New Orleans itself dry.  But NASCAR fans are cursing the storm on their couches—rain from Lee delayed the Advocare 500 in Atlanta.  This storm is as much about the pictures as the rain, with NASA tweeting satellite pictures:

Lastly, a hurricane that’s been and gone, but still wreaking havoc in the Northeast.  It’s been a week since Irene blew through New Jersey, New York and Vermont, but flooding is still an issue in all 3 states, as is the cleanup and rebuilding from a storm that took down trees and washed out roads.  President Obama flew into northern New Jersey, touring the damage in Paterson, where he said that residents shouldn’t worry that Congress will withhold federal aid money.  Newark, NJ Mayor Cory Booker:

Going international now, the great Australian gangster Ned Kelly has been found…again…130 years after his death.  The notorious criminal was hanged for the murder of 3 policemen back in November of 1880, and his remains were thrown in a mass grave on the prison grounds in Melbourne.  That jail closed, and the grave was dug up and moved to a new penitentiary in 1929. Yvonne, the cunning cow that was labeled a public danger in Germany, has been caught.  The brown dairy cow escaped from her sanctuary in May, jumping a fence after she “got tired of the loneliness,” according the town council there.  I guess milk does do a body good.  She was then labeled a danger after nearly getting into an accident with a police car.  Somebody’s gotta stop those dang cows from driving.  No sooner had @MontBerte tweeted that the search had been called off…

Meanwhile, in Virginia, a man lost his head after getting to an argument with his ex-wife.  Literally.  The unidentified 46-year-old lit a trailer of his belongings on fire, tied a cable around a tree, hopped in his SUV — attached to the trailer — and roped that cable around his neck.  Cops and firefighters tried to coax him out of the truck, fearing for his life.  He gunned it, instead.  The man’s body was yanked right out the back window of his Ford Explorer, his head was yanked clean off. It was a little post-lunch tremor…if you consider a 5.8 earthquake to be little…that left many along the East Coast…

The rumbler was centered in Mineral, Virginia, but was felt all over the eastern seaboard.  From Capitol Hill…

((I was sitting on the 3rd floor of the Capitol, on the House side.  And it felt as though the shockwave went from the Senate side to the House side.  And at first there was just a slight trembling.  There’s an elevator bank very close to the office that I use, and I thought that maybe it was something like that.  They’re also doing a lot of construction on Capitol Hill right now, during the recess, you know, in refurbishing things…and I thought it might be something related to that.))

((After 3 to 4 seconds, when it continued, I realized that was not the case.  And when my dogs went flying off the bed I realized, “oh, we’re having an earthquake.”))
