New Words Added to the Oxford English Dictionary

The Oxford English Dictionary has added some new words this year.

    FOX’s Monica Rix has details:

You can thank millennials for some of these updates. One of the words added: “woke.”

    It’s featured in a lot of music….

    (OSHUN) “Stay Woke…”

‘Woke’ refers to being ‘aware’ or ‘well-informed’, especially when it comes to political or cultural issues. But it was really the Black Lives Matter movement and social media that made it mainstream.

“Post-truth’ is another addition. I’ll let late night host Stephen Colbert explain this one:

(Colbert) “The quality of preferring concepts or facts, one wishes to be true, rather than concepts or facts known to be true.”

There’s also a new word at the end of the dictionary: “zyzzyva,” it’s a tropical bug found on palm trees in South America.

The updated dictionary comes out in September.
