Poll Shows More Than Half of Americans Believe Confederate Monuments Should Remain

Confederate monuments may be coming down left and right. But most Americans believe they should stay.

    FOX’s Tom Rigatti reports:

62 percent of Americans think the statues should remain as historical symbols, while just 27 percent believe they should be removed because they’re offensive to some. That’s according to a new poll by the PBS NewsHour, NPR and Marist.

Fierce debate over the country’s confederate symbols is raging, stemming from the white supremacist rally last weekend protesting the planned removal of a Gen. Robert E. Lee statue in Charlottesville, VA.

Violent clashes led to the death of 32-year-old counter-protester Heather Heyer. Vandals this week defaced a statue of Gen. Lee outside a chapel at Duke University, breaking his nose and face.
